Animals as victims

Animals are “sentient” creatures in that they have the capacity for both cognition and emotion as well as a capacity for suffering. Like human beings, animals that are injured, abused or maltreated can experience:

  • fear
  • anxiety
  • pain
  • suffering

When we as a species minimize our empathy for the experiences of animals we perhaps also diminish our empathy for human beings also. By accurately viewing animals as victims of violence rather than as a symptom, we are more able to address issues of human pathology and public safety.
