What resources exist for the animals of domestic violence victims?
Victims of domestic violence have a variety of resources to assist them with providing care and safety for their animals. Victims of violence can obtain protection orders through the court that include animals as protected property in the protective order. These protective orders make it a violation of the court order if the “restrained party” attempts to threaten, take or harm the animal. Many victims of domestic violence make choices to stay in a violent situation in order to protect their animals. Safe Havens are available to provide housing options for the animals of victims of domestic violence and the Sheltering Animals & Families Together is another resource for housing animals. In some communities, local animal shelters or the Humane Society can provide temporary housing for animals. Domestic violence shelters may have other resources as well.
